We have an exciting opportunity for a Marine Fleet Engineer to join our Team at Port Taranaki.

The opportunity

We are seeking a skilled and reliable individual to help ensure the safe, efficient, and compliant operation of the company’s marine fleet. The role involves carrying out both planned and reactive maintenance, resolving technical issues, and implementing operational improvements. Serving as the permanent relief Marine Fleet Engineer, you will provide essential cover during periods of planned and unplanned absence, ensuring the continuity of engineering operations across the fleet.

This is a fantastic opportunity to be a part of our wider marine operations team and contribute to our long-term success.

Key responsibilities

  • Carry out planned and reactive maintenance on the company’s marine fleet to high safety and compliance standards.
  • Plan and manage spare parts, resources, and maintenance schedules to minimise vessel downtime.
  • Operate tugs as Chief or Second Engineer for harbour towage and coastal voyages, assisting with deck and emergency operations when required.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records using the Maximo system and recommend improvements to vessel performance.
  • Work collaboratively with crew to share operational duties and manage fatigue risks.
  • Ensure tug engine rooms and related spaces are kept clean, safe, and well-organised.
  • Actively promote and participate in health, safety, and environmental initiatives.

About you

You have proven marine engineering experience and the flexibility to step in and cover during periods of leave or operational need. You will thrive in a dynamic environment, adapting quickly to changing priorities. To set yourself up for success in this role, you will ideally also have:

  • MEC 1 or MEC 2 ECE.
  • Advanced diagnostic and problem-solving skills, applying systematic techniques to resolve complex technical issues efficiently.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of ship safety systems and their application to ensure safe operations.
  • Flexible time management skills suited to on-call and shift operations, with proven experience in maintaining performance and safety standards through effective fatigue management.

While not essential, it would be great if you also had:

  • Previous harbour tug operations experience.
  • Solid understanding and knowledge of Azimuth Thruster and Voith Propeller Systems.
  • Electrical and control systems maintenance and diagnostic skills.
  • Seagoing experience beyond coastal limits.
  • Relevant tertiary qualification, for example, a Diploma in Engineering or other.
