The opportunity

Port Taranaki is seeking a Casual Marine Pilot to join our Marine team in New Plymouth, supporting the safe, reliable and efficient movement of vessels into and out of the Port.

Working with experienced marine and operational colleagues, you will provide pilotage and roster coverage, contribute to emergency preparedness and peer learning, and help improve marine operations.

About the role

Reporting to the Operations Manager, Marine, you will apply your marine judgement and ship-maneuvering skills to provide pilotage and essential roster coverage.

You will coordinate shipping movements with Planning, Tugs, Launches, Wharf Services, Commercial and Infrastructure teams, considering berth priorities, customer requirements, vessel size and draft.

You will also support the Port Emergency Response Plan, participate in exercises and respond to marine emergencies as required.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide safe, efficient pilotage, applying marine judgement and ship-manoeuvring expertise to changing conditions.
  • Promptly report plant, equipment and navigational failures to the appropriate parties.
  • Coordinate shipping movements and the efficient use of staff and floating plant with internal teams, suppliers, partners and customers.
  • Undertake Deputy Harbour Master duties and act as Harbour Master when required.
  • Support emergency planning, exercises and responses to pollution, lost vessels and missing persons.
  • Act as on-scene commander when directed by the Incident Controller and assist with Tier 1, 2 or 3 oil pollution events.
  • Participate in peer review to maintain and support competence.
  • Help develop and review marine operating and training procedures.
  • Participate in health, safety and environment initiatives, event reporting and safety communications.
  • Work rostered shifts and remain available to respond throughout rostered periods.

About you

You will be an experienced maritime professional with strong ship-maneuvering skills, calm judgement and the confidence to make sound operational decisions.

You will communicate clearly, build trusted relationships and work well under pressure. Flexible, safety-focused and customer-minded, you will share your expertise and support team learning as operational needs change.

To be successful in this role you will have

  • A Class 1 Master Mariner’s Certificate.
  • STCW 95 certification.
  • Bridge Resource Management certification.
  • Experience in a senior seagoing position.
  • A current maritime medical certificate.
  • Strong ship-maneuvering skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build trust-based relationships with stakeholders and customers.
  • The ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Good time-management skills and the ability to work under pressure.
  • Digital literacy and sound administration skills.
  • The flexibility to work within agreed shift patterns in support of the Marine team.

Experience holding a pilotage license or Pilotage Exempt Certificate, relevant business management or health and safety qualifications, and oil response on-scene commander, CIMS 4 or other emergency response qualifications would be advantageous.
